Saskatoon, Okla. March 13, 2025 — The U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Viagra to treat erectile dysfunction, according to an article posted on Monday. The drug is being studied by a team of scientists led by Dr. Robert J. Gershan, MD, from the University of Utah, and Dr. James A. Cunha, PhD, from the University of Arizona, Arizona.
In a March 10, 2025, article in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, the FDA warned that Viagra will not treat erectile dysfunction but may help men with erectile dysfunction manage the condition. The drug is approved for use in men between the ages of 18 and 64.
“There are several reasons for treating erectile dysfunction with Viagra,” Dr. Cunha said. “Viagra can increase blood flow to the penis when it is not needed. This can be beneficial for men with erectile dysfunction, but it may be detrimental to those who have underlying physical or mental health conditions, or are taking other medications.”
Viagra is an FDA-approved medication that treats erectile dysfunction in men. The drug contains sildenafil, the same active ingredient as Viagra.
Dr. Gershan, who also is a researcher at the University of Utah, said that the FDA has approved Viagra in three doses, with each dose being approved by the agency to treat erectile dysfunction.
Cunha said that the FDA’s approval of Viagra increases the number of drugs approved to treat erectile dysfunction by about 40 percent and improves overall sexual health and quality of life.
“We want to make sure we can continue to help men with erectile dysfunction,” Dr. “If you have a condition or medical problem, we’d like to make it easier for you to get help with erectile dysfunction.”
